A weekend in Milan

SONG: Not by Big Thief Hi everyone! I know it's been a good while since I posted. I've just been doing a bit of travelling and the rest of my time is spent either teaching or planning lessons. Being a primary school teacher is a lot of work!  Today I'm writing about my recent trip to Milan where I visited my aunt and cousin. Fortunately as we went around the city I kept a handy note of everywhere we went, so hopefully the memories should come flooding back and a half-decent blogpost will emerge! We can at least hope... Rooftop Cocktail Experience I took the train from Turin to Milan and met my aunt and cousin at the hotel we were staying - Il Duca (part of the ME range). It was a very classy place and we arrived to a bottle of Prosecco and some Halloween biscuits in our room as well as a complimentary cocktail tasting for our first evening on their rooftop bar (oowee).  We did our best to dress nicely for the bar (although my aunt and cousin had been up sine 4 and I...

9 Places you have to try in Turin!

SONG: Eat, Sleep, Wake (Nothing But You) by Bombay Bicycle Club I’m back! This week I thought I’d talk about some unmissable spots and amazing finds that I have come across so far in Turin. So without further ado, this is my list of top bars and restaurants in Turin… Bars... 1. Al Vej Bicerin I found this place when my parents were visiting; we were just looking for a spot to have a drink on our first day, and true to themselves, the only criteria was somewhere away from the tourist traps. Al Vej Bicerin was just around the corner from Piazza San Carlo down a little side street next to a few lunch spots, and it was here that I found the best Aperol Spritz in Turin’s central city: and trust me I’ve tried plenty! During the late afternoon and evening, this little bar also offers a very well-priced Apericena, which was a smorgasbord of nibbles and canapes to enjoy with your drink. The culture of Apericena is rife in Turin, most bars offer a drink with as many returns to the finger fo...

Turin in a Weekend - where to go and what to see

ALBUM - OK Computer OKNOTOK 1997 2017 by Radiohead It’s been a good while since I have posted as I wanted to focus on my final year of studies at Edinburgh. I have now finished my studies and have moved to drumroll please… Turin! In my final year of university, I applied for a place as an English Language Assistant in either Spain or Italy. I got placed in Italy and then finally in June I found out I was coming to Turin in the Piemonte region. As you can all imagine the first stint here has been a whirlwind of emotions and struggles with the all too familiar Italian bureaucracy, but I’m pleased to say that by the time I post this I will have done a whole month in Turin! I thought I would break my embarrassingly long hiatus from blogging with a post about what to do on a whistlestop tour of Turin. My best friend (and my very inspiration for having started blogging) Ciara came to visit me when I first got here and we had the most amazing 2 and a bit days exploring the city. So here...

Further adventures of a Mess - La Serena

ALBUM - Salad Days by Mac DeMarco It’s another storytime blogpost today! I finally made it out of busy Santiago to see what else Chile had to offer. What ensued can only be described as madness. As usual with my stories… it’s to be expected by now I guess. So we decided to go to La Serena; my flatmate had found a beach where you could go diving with dolphins and see penguins. What’s not to like?! Nearby was the Elqui Valley where you could go to a pisquero (where they make pisco - the typical drink of Chile) and get great views of the stars at night - it just kept getting better. So we booked an overnight bus on Thursday night, two nights in a hostel in La Serena and a return bus on the Sunday. We wouldn't even miss a class! Because I was involved, I decided we should go get a last nice dinner and some drinks in Santiago before our bus at midnight. The bigger mistake was probably accepting another round of Pisco sours at about half 10 (it was two for one after all). Looking up abou...

Santiago - First Impressions

ALBUM - Body Confident/Easy Go - The Hubbards It’s been a while, I’ll admit that. But I do think I have a pretty decent excuse. I finished my exams in Sicily and then had a hectic few weeks at home before making the trek to SANTIAGO! That’s right, I am here! I’ve nearly been here two weeks but honestly it has felt like no time at all. So today I thought I would treat us all to my first thoughts on this city. My flight was overnight, and after immigration and waiting a stupid amount of time for my bags I fell into the back of a taxi en route to my new flat. A lot of my friends have come to their new cities with a bed in a hostel and once they arrive, decide to find their flat. I didn’t do this in either city, something about coming with no plan stressed me out. I actually found my flats very easily on websites and I’m sure I was lucky that there were no nasty surprises. In fact my room looks out on a stunning view of the Andes climbing away behind the sprawling high rises of Santiago, w...

I’m on my way! But I don't really want to leave…

ALBUM: Feeler on the Roof by Fripps & Fripps Me again! I’ll admit, I really struggled to find inspiration for a blogpost this time around. Since my return to Catania, I have been a large-scale hermit - barely leaving the house and just studying. And I don’t have to explain how boring a life of studying is! But up until a few days ago all of my studying had been without end and I was unsure when my exams would be. Now, however, I have official dates for both my exams. I am writing this on Sunday and my exams are Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning. RIP. I had initially chosen to study General Linguistics and Italian Literature, but on taking my Italian Literature course for about a week I knew I had to change. Imagine two hours of lecture with no visual aids (there was a chalkboard but it didn’t get used) and a small old man - who may have actually been alive when Dante wrote his Commedia - speaking in the quietest voice known to man and that’s pretty much my lectures. First mo...

Homeless in Edinburgh - a Fool’s Guide to Hogmanay

ALBUM: Sellotape by Tango in the Attic Hi everyone! I hope this finds you in good health and enjoying the New Year. Today it’s another story time from my adventure to Edinburgh over the New Year. But I thought I’d also like to add a bit about the usual thoughts we all get around this time. To begin with, I would like to apologise for and explain my absence over December. If you are an avid reader of my blog (you should be) you will know that I am on my year abroad in Sicily. But, as of February 24th, I will be moving to Santiago, Chile. I’m so excited for the opportunity to visit this area of the world, but as of now, there are a few hiccoughs. I got officially accepted at PUC in Santiago about midway through November and have been patiently awaiting the arrival of my acceptance letter in the UK. Well, I was patiently waiting until about midway through December when I began to freak out. And this is my convenient segue into the next part of my blog. I hate to admit it but I am an ins...
